Episode 169: Degrees of Coach Development

Josh Martin is a visionary who coaches fitness. You can hear his whole coaching story here, and his theory on building coaches to be your strategic advantage here. Josh is one of the most popular mentors on the Two-Brain team, and he leads the Coaching speakers’ panel at the 2019 Summit in two weeks. At the Summit, Josh will make a “big reveal”: a new way to think about coach development in your gym and some incredibly valuable tools to help build your system, develop your coaching staff, and guide them to meaningful careers in fitness. Josh develops coaches in degrees. In this episode, he walks host Greg Strauch through the six degrees of coach development. Way back in the day, there was this idea that if you are just an excellent coach,  you’d be the best coach ever and everything was going to work out all right with your business. And so it was this idea that excellence in coaching was tied to excellence in business, and we know that’s not true. Being excellent in coaching is in no way related whatsoever to being excellent in business. And so what we saw over the years, especially as excellence in business was pursued, is the pendulum kind of swung to where we were focused on a lot of the business side of things and that’s not a bad thing at all. I think that that is incredibly important for the sustainability of the whole system. But what we have to remember too as owners is that our coaches are actually the ones delivering the very service that we’re selling. And so if we neglect to develop them and continually develop them and make them better and better and offer them a chance at a meaningful longterm career, then all of a sudden we’re delivering a product that is just not worthwhile. And so that’s really where the impetus for this having ...

Less Feedback Is More

Occam’s razor cuts a closer shave.   It’s a philosophical principle that will help you grow your business, train your clients and avoid stress. Occam’s razor says: “simpler solutions are more likely to be correct than complex ones.”   In coaching, that means “Your clients can’t follow two commands.”   In business, that means “you can’t act on every piece of client feedback you get.”   In leadership, that means “tell them exactly what you want them to do.”   Here’s how to put Occam’s razor into practice in your gym business, help your clients progress faster, guide your team to success, and stay focused yourself.   Coaching: Correct one thing at a time. Every client should receive 1:1 coaching from you every day. Whether in a big group, small group or personal training session, your job is to provide individual coaching to every client. But it’s tempting for novice coaches to coach TOO much. Vomiting information on a client will just paralyze them. Tell them one thing to fix; promise to teach them the next step tomorrow; and let them achieve mastery one step at a time. Avoid the temptation to show off your knowledge.   Tell them what you’re going to tell them. Then tell them. Then tell them what you told them. Instead of sharing several points at once, spend your entire session on one key point. Give an overview at the whiteboard. Then get really in depth with each client individually. Finally, recap the lesson for the group.   Staff Development: Keep your staff evaluations short. More categories for evaluation isn’t better, because the most important points of measurement get buried. It’s critical that coaches show up early; look great; smile at everyone; keep everyone engaged; and end on time. You might add 2-3 more criteria to the list. But a 20-section coaching evaluation is almost worse than no evaluation at all, because it’s not a ...

TwoBrain Marketing Episode 10: Cody Ringle

Today we are joined by Cody of CrossFit ColdWater and CrossFit Angola. We hear about his first experiences with CrossFit and how he turned $250 dollars in ad spend into $5,500 worth of revenue. When he did come back, it took only a couple of classes and he was hooked. Today Cody owns two CrossFit gyms and is committed to improving the quality of people’s lives through strength and conditioning.  Cody purchased CrossFit Coldwater in 2015. Two years later, he was broke and so stressed that he developed Bell’s palsy. He tried mentorship with a different group, but didn’t get much from it.
